PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS AMONG ABORIGINES OF THE AUSTRALIAN WESTERN DESERT by MALCOLM A. KIDSON and IVOR H. JONES. Archives of General Psychiatry, 19, no. 4 (October 1968): 413-417

For some time a small number of Australian investigators have devoted their research interest to the study of Australian Aborigines. Representative of their efforts are the papers which follow. M. A. KIDSON and I. H. JONES describe a survey of psychiatric disorders among a tradition-oriented community of Aborigines in the Australian western desert. The prevalence of a wide range of psychiatric disorders is reported. G. N. BIANCHI, J. E. CAWTE, and L. G. KILOH studied mental health problems of Australian Aborigines in relation to cultural identity. They correlated parameters of cultural identity with symp toms, as measured by a modified Cornell Medical Index Questionnaire, but found few correlations between the two areas investigated. Finally, B. NUR COMBE and J. E. CAWTE report on a survey of psychiatric morbidity amongst the children of an aboriginal population.
